Producer

London

Job Introduction

Delivering high impact investigative journalism that holds power to account is a strategic objective for the World Service.

In the past few years, BBC Eye has become a global brand for fearless, pioneering and digital-savvy investigative journalism. The award-winning team has produced high impact original journalism about Eastern Europe and Eastern Asia for local language audiences and global audiences of BBC News. Their work has had outstanding real-world impact and has become, in many instances, the basis for international calls to action and investigations of human rights abuses by governments and global organisations.

Main Responsibilities

We are looking for an experienced Producer with rich experience of undercover investigation, forensic journalism and longform documentary production. You will also support our executive/series producers in the production and rollout of longform investigative documentaries.

You'll work closely with presenters where appropriate, ensuring they are properly briefed, and involving them in the editorial process, including scripting. You'll work closely with the production manager to ensure every aspect of production is carefully planned so that filming and editing schedules ensure maximum productivity and programmes come in on budget. You'll lead and motivate Assistant Producers and Researchers, ensuring they have clear and realistic objectives, giving clear briefings on research, story development, Infosec protocols, high-risk mitigation, post-production and impact. You'll collaborate with digital teams across BBC Output and Content areas to craft and lead an impactful rollout for our documentary investigations.

Are you the right candidate?

Proven ability to produce original investigative documentaries and a track record of running complex investigative projects in collaboration with sources and local journalists in difficult or hostile environments.
Can identify and select stories for investigative documentaries in a way which demonstrates strong journalistic skills and editorial judgement.
Can drive investigative journalism projects, both in terms of style and structure, encouraging innovation and working within BBC editorial guidelines.
Proven experience in directing and filming long-form documentaries in the field.
Strong track record of dealing with complex legal, editorial and high risk issues
Fluency in our main target audience languages is very desirable - Eastern European or East Asian languages (especially Russian and Chinese)
Excellent scripting and narrative skills, and comprehensive experience of running long-form edits.
Thorough understanding of the needs and profile of our target audiences across World Service and the ability to translate these into imaginative and compelling multi-platform content.
Strong knowledge of how to apply OSINT tools and techniques to investigative documentaries is desirable.
