BBC Media Operations is at the heart of delivering incredible content across all our platforms for all audiences. Comprising around nine hundred people, it manages the craft and production operations for the BBC's news, radio, and sport services across London, Salford, and Birmingham - capturing, editing, and producing output 24x7 for TV, radio, and online.


Our team are experts in their field with exceptional technical, operational and production creativity at their heart. Working closely together with our editorial colleagues, we co-create all content reaching millions of people across the UK and the World daily.









Studio Director's are a key part of Media Operations and you'll be joining a team of highly skilled and creative people working 24/7, 365 days of the year at the heart of BBC News and Sport, working closely with editorial teams to provide high quality content, on 5 live, Radio 4 and the World Service.

Main Responsibilities
Operating the mixing desks and all studio equipment, Studio Directors play a key operational role behind everything you hear on the radio and are responsible for ensuring audio ambitions are achieved by the programme teams on-air.

The role of Studio Director encompasses the role of a studio sound engineer, operating the sound mixing desk during live radio programmes on national and international radio networks, whilst adding creative flair.

In addition to taking responsibility for the audio, Studio Directors connect and technically manage on-air contributors, keep the live programmes on track and make sure that the operation runs smoothly out of hours.

The Studio Director team also plays a key role in providing technical assistance to the editorial teams outside of the studio environment. This ranges from helping connect guests to studios for broadcast, fault finding technical equipment, sourcing and editing audio, recording and mixing podcasts, and a huge range of other technical requests.

As a Studio Director specializing in sound and audio, you'll be responsible for overseeing high-quality audio production across a variety of projects. You'll play a crucial role in shaping the sound landscape at the BBC, ensuring that audio output meets the highest standards of excellence.


The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of proactively identifying and solving problems in an audio or sounds setting, while also driving improvements in the effectiveness of Media Operations. You'll bring both technical and creative vision to the role, ensuring that every audio output meets the BBC's industry leading standards.


For this role, you will need to be self-motivated, time conscious and be able to respond well to pressure. You will be able to constructively offer creative ideas in-line with the priorities of the editorial team and be expected to help with the support of other members of the Studio Director and Technical Production team.

You will:
• Have demonstrable experience of working with sound, ideally in live environments or in the radio industry.
• Demonstrate a distinct interest in sound and audio and how this could be implemented in the role of a Studio Director at the BBC
• Have experience of working well with others to realise their programme ideas
